Welcome to Re-Membering Change LLC with Nancy M. Buczeksmith LMHC! Thank you for taking the time to consider my fledgling solo-practice for your mental health needs. While I am currently in the virtual world providing Telehealth services through phone or video my eventual physical location is in the Capital District of New York State.
I am passionate about the human potential for change. I know each one of us has already made changes in our lives and these provide the key to understanding the personal strengths and values we each possess that can lead us to the successful resolution of concerns or achievement of our goals.
I believe each person is unique despite the way society may categorize them through identity (race, gender, sexuality, age or spirituality), diagnosis (anxiety, depression, adjustment, or developmental) relationships (parent child, peer, co-worker) or experiences (trauma, family separation, adoption). I believe each person possess the ability to explore and understand the interaction of these labels for themselves and has the ability to make behavioral changes or reach emotional acceptance over their own experiences…to re-write their narrative.
It is important to me that clients of my practice benefit from education and explorations of parts of their whole. They will be able to demonstrate in sessions their understanding of these parts both individually and as part of the complex nature of humans (and self) to improve relationships with self and others as well as improve their problem solving or coping to increase their own quality of life and resolve their struggles.
Clients come to me because they are interested in exploring their own potential for change. It is hoped they perceive a benefit from services able to notice changes with their thoughts, feelings or behaviors regarding their personal concerns.
I have the qualities that make a therapy relationship beneficial to therapist and client. I strive to be honest, open, transparent and ethical in both my professional and private life. I encourage clients to explore and challenge my interpretations so that they can take ownership of them and fully support them to engage in the process of resolving conflicts they may have with me in sessions. These skills practiced in the safety of the Therapist-Client relationship are highly generalizable to their life outside of sessions.
I have been a teacher, mentor and parent for over 30 years exposing me to numerous situations and concerns common to adolescents and adults. I have worked as a counselor with adolescents and adults in various settings addressing concerns including: Adoption, Adjustment, ADHD, Anxiety, Conflict, Depression, Family Dynamics, Identity (race, gender, sexuality, phase of life), Mood Disorders, PTSD, Sexual Trauma or Sexual Acting Out Behaviors and Substance Use/Abuse. I have also worked conducting research on issues relevant to many in my client base including: locus of control in women ages 7-90, therapist self-awareness and therapist client alliance, as well as racial micro aggressions and disparities. Of particular interest to me is the research related to Adoption microaggressions and the impact these have on individuals through out their lifespan. For this reason, I am most drawn to working with individuals struggling with conflict or emotional distress related to identity issues and family or early childhood experiences. The space I offer my clients is centered on the human need for safety, comfort and familiarity that many of us seek.
While I identify as a therapist in the Psychodynamic school of thought with a focus on emotional awareness, I am pragmatic and recognize that not every client comes into therapy wanting to explore their feelings. Each client has different skills, preferences and strengths so sessions are always personalized with this in mind. Over the years I have developed an appreciation for the following interventions, explorations or skills: Boundary setting, CBT/DBT, Communication, Coping/Calming, Emotional regulation, Family Dynamics, Identity, Mindfulness, Motivational, Narratives, Positive Psychology, Reframing, Resiliency, Safety Planning Spirituality, Strengths and Values exploration.,
People often experience difficulties in their daily life due to anxiety, depression, conflicted relationships, identity concerns or adjustment to phase of life issues. People face challenges in effectively coping with their daily stressors due to a lack of knowledge or skills that enable them to self-sooth, distract, communicate or advocate their own needs in healthy ways effectively. People seek therapy to clarify their desire for change, learn new skills and implement problem solving in alignment with their goals of personal change. Parents seek counseling for their adolescent children in hopes their child will want to do the same and provide the child with a trusted adult to share their concerns with.
Clients that do benefit from sessions are better able to clarify the relationship between their experiences, thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Understanding of these interactions enables individuals to choose their actions instead of simply reacting. This behavior change increases both one’s own self-esteem and improves relationships with others at home, school or work. Essentially allowing individuals to re-write their own narrative, and define who they are for themselves.
